Should city government structure be changed?
Perhaps it’s time to replace the city manager form of government with full-time, fully salaried mayor and council members.
Today, when we are unhappy with the way the city is being managed, our only option is fire the mayor.
Instead of councilmen, we could have elected fire and police commissioners, an elected utility commissioner, etc. Men or women in these positions would be more responsive to the public (voters) rather than in promoting the city bureaucracy at the taxpayer’s expense.
