In 1969, the Lubbock State Supported Living Center, formerly known as the Lubbock State School, was established on the northern outskirts of the town.
The 226-acre, 42-building facility is home to about 210 mentally and emotionally challenged patients and workplace to about 900 employees.
Libby Allen, director of the LSSLC, said the staff is busy 24 hours a day supervising patients.
